A story told in an ice cream shop on June 10th, 2026.

The Marvelous Miracle Ice Cream

Once there was a girl who invented a new flavor of ice cream that no one had ever seen or tasted before.

It was so unique that no one who tasted it could explain to anyone what it tasted like. There were so many flavors in it that it was impossible to describe. If you said, “Well, it seems like maybe there’s a hint of mango in there, and maybe a hint of banana, and maybe a hint of lavender, and cotton candy, and…is that apple?” you’d soon find that you could do that all day and still never accurately describe its amazing flavor.

It was an odd color, too, so you couldn’t really guess by looking at it what it might taste like. It was an odd, light shade of purplish blue, with little flecks of dark green—or maybe they were darker than that, like dark chocolate—and…well, I’m really not going to be able to describe it so I’ll stop trying.

Another interesting thing about this ice cream was that it tasted so wonderful that just a single lick of it would make you smile—even if you were having the worst day ever—and by the second lick, you felt like your whole body was filled with joy, and you were having the best day of your life. It just cheered you up no matter what else was going on.

The girl had created this ice cream using exactly 359 ingredients. Only she knew exactly what those ingredients were and exactly how much of each ingredient to use when making the ice cream.

The girl LOVED to travel, and she had gathered the perfect ingredients during her travels. She might taste lavender in Hungary, lavender in France, and lavender in the Netherlands, and decide that the Hungarian lavender was just right. Then she would collect a bit to use in her secret recipe. Now imagine that happening 358 more times. It was a long process.

It took so long, in fact, that even after she had perfected her recipe and knew exactly what ingredients she needed and from where, it took her a whole year to gather ingredients to make about one pint of her ice cream.

Since she could only make a small quantity each year, she only shared it with a few special people. Her mom, of course, and her sister, sometimes her aunt, her grandfather, her best friend… She allowed each person to enjoy just a single spoonful each year, and then it would be gone until the following year when she made it again.

She may have been a bit too generous in sharing her creation, because word started to get around about how wonderful it was and how joyful it made you feel when you tasted it. Soon some very famous people were asking for a taste. World-famous chefs tried to reproduce it—and of course they failed. Scientists tried to figure out the recipe—but of course they could not.

Since the girl was the only source of this marvelous ice cream, her home was soon surrounded by crowds of people asking for a taste. Some offered her thousands to try it. Some offered her tens of thousands. Some offered her millions. All of this was a waste of their time, of course, since it wasn’t the right time of year for a batch of ice cream to be available, and she wasn’t even home most of the time. She traveled most of each year as she slowly and carefully gathered ingredients for her next batch.

Once, when she had a new batch in the freezer, someone robbed her house while she was out and took her entire supply for that year. That’s when she decided that she had to find somewhere safer to store her ice cream.

She and her mother and sister visited the biggest bank in town. They asked the bank president if the vault there could hold frozen things. He said that he couldn’t see why that would be a thing that a bank would ever need to do. The girl opened a cooler and brought out a plastic spoon with one ice-cold bite of her ice cream frozen onto the spoon. (She had started freezing her ice cream onto lovely individual-bite spoons so they could be given to people more easily.) As soon as the bank president tasted the miraculous ice cream, he understood why she needed to protect it.

He agreed to put some freezer equipment in the bank’s safe. Once that was installed, the girl never needed to worry about her ice cream being stolen again. Whenever she finished a new batch and had it frozen into spoon-bites—or whenever she wanted to give or sell a spoon-bite to someone—she’d go to the bank, where she was welcome to enter the vault at any time, day or night.

To get into the vault, she had to let a little gadget on the wall just outside of the vault scan her eye. Then she put a finger or thumb onto a sensor so it could read her fingerprint. Then she typed in a secret code that only she knew: 1012. Then the vault would open and she could get some of her ice cream from the special freezer compartment in the vault (or put a new batch of ice cream in).

Years went by, and the girl continued making her marvelous ice cream. She often gave it away to friends and family members, and once in a while she sold some to people who were happy to pay her a small fortune for even a single spoonful. The girl was able to pay for her travel around the world to find ingredients, and she also made a comfortable living for herself and her family.

As she became more and more famous she was interviewed on television and in magazines all over the world. People always asked her about the ingredients, but of course she wouldn’t tell them her secrets. Her younger sister grew up to be one of those interviewers, and also became quite famous as a host at award shows and other gala events.

Once, during an interview being conducted by her own sister, she was asked what the name of the flavor she had invented was. Her sister was surprised to hear that it still didn’t have a name, despite being famous all around the world. Her sister suggested that since there was no other flavor like it, maybe it should just be named after its creator. The girl agreed, and from that day on, the ice cream and its amazing, indescribable flavor had a name: Rea.

Once, when she was older—about 27 years old—another interviewer asked her a question that she was able to answer without revealing any secrets: “What was your inspiration for creating such a unique and amazing ice cream flavor? How did you come up with the idea?”

Rea said, “Years ago, back in 2026, I was at an ice cream shop with my sister and my mother and a friend of ours from church, and our friend told us a story about a girl who invented an amazing new flavor of ice cream. I liked the idea so much that I started looking for ingredients in my travels around the world. Once I had collected 359 secret ingredients, I realized that I had the same number of ingredients as the girl in the story! I worked with them for months before I found just the right combination and created my ice cream. I had decided that the girl in that story was going to be me, and I got to work making that story come true. And I did!”
